ASA Trails are for Snowmobiles
The Alberta Snowmobile Association (ASA) is a volunteer-led and driven organization whose goal and mission is to provide a safe and enjoyable snowmobile experience for our members, Albertans, and visitors alike.
To provide this experience, the ASA clubs groom the snowmobile trail system with specialized grooming equipment, to provide a safe and comfortable ride. Trail grooming takes time, money, and effort by our volunteer clubs and it is intended to be ridden on by snowmobiles only. A snowmobile is legally identified by the SSN identification number located on the tunnel of your snowmobile.
Use of wheeled or tracked vehicles on a groomed snowmobile trail will destroy the hard work put into the grooming, causing the loss of time, fuel and effort by our local community volunteers. It also causes ruts to form on the surface, creating a safety hazard for snowmobilers. A snowmobile ski can easily get caught in these ruts and lead to a dangerous outcome. It makes the surface bumpy and rutted, also taking away the desired smooth ride that snowmobilers enjoy.
The ASA is a provincial association, with trails crossing many legal land types, from vacant public land to parks, municipal, and even private land. To provide this experience, the ASA carries many insurance policies that provide only for the recreational use of snowmobiles on our managed systems. As a volunteer not-for-profit association, these large policies are very costly, and we cannot offer coverage for any other machine types on our trails. An ASA membership provides access and coverage for snowmobile use only.
We would ask users of other machine types to respectfully find other trails to recreate upon. Alberta enjoys a very large land base, with many open spaces for all groups to find space to enjoy. The ASA trail systems (identified on our online map on our website) are identified publicly and recognized as Alberta’s snowmobile system.
As the provincial contractor for the Province of Alberta, we are also putting the finishing touches on defined dates for vehicle types on provincial trails.
Very soon, December 1 through April will see only snowmobiles legally permitted upon the designated snowmobile trails.
